Joey - Winter Garden
Joey was a very active 12-year-old who loved to play golf, basketball and baseball. So when he began to slow down and had several falls at school, his parents knew something wasn't right.
His local physicians referred him to Shands Children's Hospital at the University of Florida. UF physicians diagnosed Joey with Juvenile Dermatomyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that attacks and breaks down muscles. He was unable to walk, run or play the sports he loves and eventually he had to use a wheelchair.
Every few months Joey returns to Shands Children's Hospital to receive IVIG - infusions to rebuild his immune system and stop the progression of the disease. He is also receiving therapy to rebuild his muscles and now he is able to walk again. Joey has good days and bad days but he continues to be hopeful. He is looking forward to the day when he can run and play his favorite sports with his friends again.
