Help kids like Shannon . Upon returning
from the petting zoo at a local fair in March 2005, five year
old Shannon suddenly became ill. She had a high fever and
severe stomach cramps that led to multiple doctor visits over
the next couple of days. By the time Shannon was transferred
to Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children she was delirious and
her intestines were badly inflamed.
The cause of Shannon 's illness was E. coli
bacteria, which triggered a deadly kidney disease known as
hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS). She needed dialysis to filter
her blood and a ventilator to help her breathe. To make matters
worse, deadly bacteria from her intestines leaked into Shannon
's blood and caused abscesses on her brain. This usually fatal
strain of bacteria was quickly discovered by Shannon 's medical
team and treated with an aggressive series of antibiotics.
Shannon has recovered from her illness with
a new confidence and many new friends. To celebrate her miraculous
recovery, she was named Florida 's ambassador in the 2006
Children's Miracle Network Champions Across America program,
helping to spread the message of the vital role of children's
hospitals across the country.
Providing world-class care for critically
ill children requires a winning team of doctors, healthcare
professionals, families, volunteers and supporters like you.
Your contribution gives our young patients the opportunity
to be normal kids during their hospital stay. That's something
every child needs.
